Late Start Model Adopted by Board of Trustees

On Monday, June 12th, the Southmont Schools Board of Trustees approved a plan to provide teachers with additional time each week to collaborate as professionals.  Education is a field that continues to change at a very rapid pace and staff in our district are furthering their commitment to the education of each of our students by meeting the challenges of today’s educational environment, which, among other things, involves studying and responding to the unique needs of our students.  That commitment will include providing time for teachers to work in PLCs (Professional Learning Communities) each week, at a regularly scheduled time, to collect, review and utilize student data to more effectively serve student academic and behavioral needs.


Each Wednesday of the school year, beginning August 16th, Southmont Schools will utilize a “Late Start” model where each building will begin the day later than normal.  Each Elementary School will operate on a 30-minute delayed start, and the Junior and Senior High Schools will operate on a 15-minute delayed start.  This time will be spent solely and consistently on PLC work and offers our teachers a more focused approach to making data-driven decisions for our students.


Each of our schools’ handbooks will be updated to reflect the Late Start schedule, and reminders will be provided at registration, through our normal parent communication channels and to students the first week of school.  For a copy the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), please click here.
